1) Initial consultation
1) Initial consultation

We will confirm previous treatments and current states of disease and then explain the HITV therapy and a personalized treatment plan for each patient. A one-hour consultation time is secured to make sure that we can have you fully understand the treatment.

What we would like you to bring:
*Referral letter (copies of medical records),
if this is not available, then materials that describe previous treatments and state of disease
*Blood test results
*Imaging test results (PET-CT, CT, MRI etc.)

↓
2) PET-CT scan

To develop a detailed treatment plan, we use PET-CT results obtained less than one month prior to starting treatment. For this reason, we would ask you to have a PET-CT scan at another medical facility.
However, this may not be necessary if you bring a recent PET-CT result to your initial consultation.

3) Apheresis
3) Apheresis

Apheresis (separation of blood components) is the process of collecting specific blood cells and plasma from whole blood by centrifugation (high-speed spinning). 100 ml of mononuclear cells, which becomes the origin of immature dentritic and memory T cells, and 150-200 ml of plasma, for the cell culture base, are collected over 2-3 hours.

4) Cell culture
4) Cell culture

Your samples collected by apheresis are immediately taken to the cell culture room within the clinic, where dendritic cells and memory T cells are grown over a period of about two weeks.

↓
5) First intratumoral injection of dendritic cells
5) First intratumoral injection of dendritic cells

Dendritic cells are injected intratumorally under CT guidance in the same area as radiation treatment. Dendritic cells injected into tumors recognize antigens (identify foreign substances) in about 24 hours.

↓
6) First injection of memory T cells

Memory T cells are injected intravenously approximately 24 - 72 hours after injection of dendritic cells. Memory T cells have the capacity to immunologically store information about antigens (foreign substances) that have been identified by dendritic cells in the body.

↓
7) Second intratumoral injection of dendritic cells

Dendritic cells are injected again under CT guidance approximately one week after the completion of radiation therapy.

8) Second injection of memory T cells

Memory T cells are injected intravenously again approximately 24 - 72 hours after injection of dendritic cells.

9) Blood tests (for evaluation of treatment)

A blood test including tumor markers is performed four weeks after the second injection of dendritic cells.

Radiation treatment facility visit

We generally have you visit the radiation treatment facility during the same week that you receive your first injection of dendritic cells. We will explain the radiation treatment and take CT images in the treatment position to help plan your treatment.

Radiation treatment
Radiation treatment

Generally, radiation treatment starts within one week after the first injection of dendritic cells. While the number of irradiations can vary depending on the state of disease, the treatment takes 1 - 4 weeks.

↓
10) PET-CT scan (for evaluation of treatment)

PET-CT scan is performed six weeks after the second injection of dendritic cells. To accurately compare the state before and after treatment, we ask you to have a scan at the same facility where you had prior treatment.

↓
11) Evaluation of treatment

The overall effectiveness of treatment is evaluated by results of blood tests and PET-CT scan. At the same time, we will discuss subsequent treatment.

Before consultation

Treatment Criteria

  • HITV therapy is applied to recurrent or inoperable advanced cancer patients.
  • The cancer must form a "lump" to be a target for vaccination.
Thus, the therapy is not applicable to blood cancers such as leukemia.
  • Any type of cancer can be treated, but we feel that the presence of five or fewer cancer lesions in the body, each less than 3 cm in maximum diameter, is desirable.
  • The tumor must respond to radiation and anti-cancer drugs.
  • You must have basic physical fitness.

Appointments

All consultations are by appointment only. If you wish to arrange a consultation, please contact us by phone. We will set a date and time for your consultation and explain what we would like you to prepare for your visit.

Outpatient Treatment

All consultations and treatments are offered on an outpatient basis. There are no inpatient facilities. If you travel long distances to visit us, we can book a room at Hotel New Otani at a special price upon your request.
