What are Dendritic cells?

The role of dendritic cells was elucidated in 1973 by Dr. Ralph Steinman, who was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. As their name suggests, dendritic cells are characterized by a morphology of branched projections similar to trees.

Dendritic cells constitute a part of white blood cells in the blood. They are distributed to various tissues and organs in the body through the bloodstream. For instance, dendritic cells residing in the epidermis are called Langerhans cells that are constantly working to eliminate harmful objects entering the body through wounds, such as microorganisms.

The same applies to cancer cells. Dendritic cells recognize these cells as harmful to the body and tell T cells to eliminate them. Hence, dendritic cells play a very important role in the immune response, the body's defense mechanism.
